Betty Reid Soskin's Attackers Race is Kept a Secret....Why?

Such a disturbing article to read when I saw that a 94-year old Park Ranger was beaten and robbed in her home. Betty Reid Soskin, 94, of Richmond was attacked in her town home about midnight Monday (6/28).

Ms. Soskin told KTVU-TV she woke up to find a man with a flashlight standing near her. She reached for her cellphone, but he grabbed it from her and they struggled. She screamed as her attacker dragged her from the bed through a hallway, where he struck her a couple of times on the side of her face. She thought “he was going to kill me,” she told the news station.

Somehow Ms. Soskin mustered all her strength and was able to lock herself inside a bathroom, where she remained until he left, the news station reported. Fearing he would come at her again, Ms. Soskin said she plugged in an iron and was prepared to strike and brand him.

Huffington Post reports, Her attacker stole several personal belongings, including the presidential coin given to her by Obama at the national tree-lighting ceremony in December. The coin was embossed with the presidential seal.

Park officials said on Thursday that the White House is sending a replacement coin to Betty Soskin, who works at the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front national historic park in northern California. But the ranger said she hopes she can recover the original.

But wait... who was her attacker? 

Authorities only identify the attacker as a “thin man in his 20s” NO RACE. Sadly in the society of which we live this leaves us to instantly to assume the attacker was WHITE.

Countless of times we see African American men/women on the news for accusations, or the media immediately publicizing the race of a suspect before any evidence is presented. If the attacker, in this case Ms. Soskin, can say that the person who attacked her was a thin man in his 20's why is his race kept a secret. You can't assume someone is in their 20's without looking at them. Period.

Harriet Tubman to Replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 Bill

Harriet Tubman – the 19th century abolitionist and suffragist who led multiple slaves through the Underground Railroad to the free states – is about to become the new face of the $20 bill, replacing slaveholder Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. (ViceNews)

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will announce the change later today (4/20). Lew will also announce that the $10 bill will keep Alexander Hamilton on the front, but feature women who led the charge to give women the right to vote on the back of the bill.

Last May, the Treasury announced that it would feature a woman alongside Hamilton, but didn't designate how the design would work. The $5 bill will also be refreshed, and will feature civil rights leaders, Politico also reported.

While the new $10 bill is expected to be released in 2020, the updated $20 bill isn't expected to be issued until 2030 at the earliest, according to a report from CNN; citing the lengthy approval process by the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence steering committee, which is made up by representatives from the the Treasury, the US Secret Service, the Federal Reserve.

A black woman born into slavery replaces a white slave owner on $20 bill would have been a better headliner if it was true. 

Since she will be featured on the back of the bill this feels more like blood-money. 

Although some may appreciate the gesture I'm the least bit moved by it. I didn't get that proud feeling when Barak Obama was elected POTUS.✊🏽 

With that said... I have mixed emotions about it. A win is a win.

#BlackLivesMatter Activist Kills Himself In Front of Ohio Statehouse

“Let the record show that I pissed on the state house before I left,”

Around 3 p.m. Monday, February 8th, a cryptic message was left on the Facebook page of Ohio Black Lives Matter activist MarShawn M. McCarrel II: "My demons won today. I'm sorry."

Around 6 p.m. that day, McCarrel's body was found outside the front door of the Ohio Statehouse, the Columbus Dispatch reports. It's believed that McCarrel died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although no one witnessed the shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 23-year-old activist was instrumental in organizing protests in Ohio after the death of Ferguson, Mo., teenager Michael Brown in 2014.

According to the New York Daily News, McCarrel founded the "youth mentorship program Pursuing Our Dreams, which launched Feed the Streets, a project to help Ohio's homeless." Earlier this year, McCarrel was named one of Radio One's Hometown Champions, an award given to community activists.

"He is selfless and will give his last in order to make sure others don't go without,” read a nomination page for the Hometown Champions Award. "MarShawn has come so far in life and has inspired so many people to help others."

"Let the record show that I pissed on the state house before I left." In another he said, "If we don't have to live through hell just to get to heaven. I’ma stay right here with you."

Spike Lee Responds to Chi-Raq Criticism

Spike Lee's latest movie called Chi-Raq​, starring Nick Cannon and Jennifer Hudson, released to theaters December 4th. Immediately after the first trailer for the film it sparked  heavy criticism due to the film's method of addressing the topic of Chicago's growing epidemic of violence. 

However, as evidenced by his recent appearance on Sway in the Morning, Spike passionately disagrees with the unfounded assessment that Chi-Raq somehow "makes light" of all the lives lost to such violence on the city's south side and all across the nation.

"For those haters who have not seen the film, who felt that we were making fun of the murder on the streets of Chicago, let me ask everybody a question," Spike proposed during the must-watch interview. "Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother, and nephew were murdered in Chicago. Why would Jennifer Hudson be in a film that ridiculed her murdered mother, brother, and nephew? Why would she be a part of that?"

Adding that those "talking shit" don't know "what the fuck they're talking about," Spike likens the apparent controversy surrounding Chi-Raq to a "misdirection play" in football. 

"Let's focus on what the movie's about," the iconic director insisted. "Gun violence is effecting every single American in this country. This film is about saving lives." (source)

Long-Overdue Nina Simone Biopic Released in December?

Since the success of the "NWA's Straight Outta Compton" biopic it seems like everyone has one or is working on one. Although I can truly do without the“Dogg Pound 4 Life” Biopic that's scheduled to be released late 2016 - I am however very excited about the long overdue biopic of Ms. Nina Simon. 

'Nina,' a biopic about the rise of Nina Simone starring Zoe Saldana, will hit theaters in December with RLJ Entertainment acquiring North American rights to the project, Entertainment Weekly reports. 

“I had the special privilege early in my career of working with Ms. Simone while coordinating a performance for former D.C. Delegate Walter E. Fauntroy and knowing first-hand of her major contribution to the soul and emotion of the Civil Rights Movement,” RLJE chairman and BET founder Robert L. Johnson said in a statement. “I look forward as I am sure many others will, to her story and legacy being made available by RLJ Entertainment to consumers on various media platforms in the coming months.”

Written and directed by newcomer Cynthia Mort, Nina follows the rise of the legendary American vocalist, a 15-time Grammy nominee known for iconic standards like “My Baby Just Cares For Me,” “Feeling Good,” and “To Be Young Gifted and Black.” 

Her struggles to balance her career and her activism left her living alone in France, feeling isolated from her own country. It was there that she met Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo), who became her assistant.

Nina’s release has been delayed for several years, with casting changes, public controversy, and even a lawsuit. Mary J. Blige was originally attached to star as Simone back in 2010, but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. 

She was replaced by Saldana, but some criticized the new casting, saying that Saldana, who is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, was too petite and light-skinned to play Simone. 

The film’s release was delayed further when Mort herself filed a lawsuit against the production company last year.

Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, has also criticized Nina, choosing instead to work on this year’s Netflix documentary about her mother, What Happened, Miss Simone?

Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill? Raven Symone Hates the Idea

Sources has reported that More than 600,000 people voted in the Women on 20s unofficial poll that named Harriet Tubman as the first female historical figure who should be placed on a new $20 bill. But actress Raven Symoné is not feeling that idea. 



Here's what she said while guest-hosting on The View: 

“No offense to everyone who’s going to be mad at me for saying this; I don’t like that idea. I don’t like it.” the actress said. “Me, personally, I would’ve chosen Rosa Parks. I would have chosen someone who is closer to the progression that we’re doing now. And I know you have to, you have to understand history so you don’t repeat it, but that doesn’t really happen in our world because we still repeat history of hating other cultures. So, I would choose a different one, no offense.”
