#FLOTUS Michelle Obama Launches Open E-Books Initiative

It's Good News Friday (it has a nice ring to it, right? ...I'll try to keep this up)

In an effort to encourage reading among our youth, First Lady Michelle Obama and the White House are meeting students and teachers where they are: The digital world.

Earlier this week, FLOTUS unveiled the “Open eBooks” App for Title 1 and Special Education teachers at a time when their budgets are stretched thin, according to a White House news release.

President Barack Obama discussed Open eBooks back in April. Now, after months of planning by a team of libraries, publishers, and non-profits, the program launched nationwide on Wednesday.

“For millions of America’s kids, Open eBooks can be a passport to a world of learning and opportunity – delivering over $250 million of reading material to students who need it most, and introducing them to a love of reading,” the release states.

The First Lady describes the app as an opportunity to spark the imaginations of children through reading.

“Do you remember a book that you loved a child, favorite story that ignited your imagination?” she asks in a White House video released Wednesday. “For so many of us, books opened our minds to a world of possibility. Unfortunately, million of children in America do not have that chance. They don’t have adequate access to books they need to learn and dream. The new Open eBooks App will help change that.”

#DCWhatUp: @Wale Will Perform at The White House! -@forevermeah

Wale is set to perform at The White House as part of Michelle Obama’s “Reach Higher” Initiative.

According to an official White House press release, FLOTUS will join Wale and several scholars on a panel at a White House summit, where they will address over 100 students that “have overcome substantial obstacles to persist through high school and make it to college.”

Wale had this to say about the huge opportunity:

I’m beyond honored & grateful to be involved in the First Lady’s “Reach Higher” initiative & to have the opportunity to sit down with her, as well as perform for the kids of D.C. I believe that the youth are the first step in creating a better country, so to be involved in a program that aims to enrich their lives is truly the greatest reward,” says Wale. “Having grown up in Washington, D.C., being invited to the White House by the First Lady is a dream come true. Thank you to Mrs. Obama & her entire staff for this opportunity.

On Thursday afternoon (7/23), following the panel discussion, Wale will perform, which will undoubtedly be a huge moment for him.

Barack and Michelle Obama Movie Coming Soon? -@forevermeah

There has been recent buzz of a movie about the early courtship of President & First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama.

The movie is rumored to be titled,  "Southside With You". 

So who's playing Barack Obama? 

Actor, Parker Sawyers, who according to IMDb is known for his roles in Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) and Monsters: Dark Continent (2014).

...and who's playing Michelle Obama? The lovely, Tika Sumpter.

The Wrap reported:

The film covers the eventful date in 1989 when a young associate named Barack Obama was trying to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson on a summer afternoon and evening, that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee‘s “Do the Right Thing” to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

Here's a little backdrop,  Michelle and Barack met when she became his mentor at Sidley Austin (law firm) while he was a summer associate around 1989, later married in 1992.

#POTUS Issues Statement On the Michael Brown Tragedy

While the country is in a state of great disturbance over the death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, at the hands of a Ferguson, St. Louis police officer, Presdient Obama has issued an official statement.

Read it below:

The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and his community at this very difficult time.As Attorney General Holder has indicated, the Department of Justice is investigating the situation along with local officials, and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed.

I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. Along with our prayers, that’s what Michael and his family, and our broader American community, deserve.

IN WTF News: Home Depot Founder Compares Obama To Hitler

Brought to you by Politico, Here's Ken Langone, the billionaire founder of Home Depot, discussing recent "populist political appeals": "I hope it's not working. Because if you go back to 1933, with different words, this is what Hitler was saying in Germany. You don’t survive as a society if you encourage and thrive on envy or jealousy.”

By design, that quote is all you need to read. It appears in the first 300 words, from the mouth of a man who tosses out public insults like pistachio shells into a cuspidor. Ken Langone is the guy you call when you need to win the morning.

Langone’s comments—sure to draw ire from those who find such comparisons to Nazi Germany insensitive—echo previous remarks from venture capitalist Tom Perkins, who likened the actions of some in the Occupy Wall Street movement to the Kristallnacht attacks on Jews in 1938. Perkins gave several interviews after the ensuing uproar, but he never really backed away from the comparison. And Langone showed no hesitancy in invoking the Nazis when describing current populist rhetoric.

Comparing the largely empty rhetoric from Democrats in 2014 to Hitler's deliberate and methodical consolidation of power should "draw ire" from anyone who has taken 4th grade history. Read more here.
