Bumble Bee Issued a Recall of 31,579 Canned Chunk Light Tuna

Put that sandwich down! Sources are reporting that thousands of cases of canned tuna are being recalled over possible spoilage that could lead to life-threatening illness.

Bumble Bee Foods has issued a voluntary recall of 31,579 cases of canned chunk light tuna that may be contaminated, reports the L.A. Times

According to the San Diego-based company, the recall is due to "process deviations" during the sterilization process at a third-party packing facility. So far, the company says that no illnesses have been reported.

The recall involves cans with three specific UPC codes of the "chunk light" variety that were processed in February and distributed nationally. The company says that the deviations could result in contamination by "spoilage organisms or pathogens," which could lead to severe illness.

"The recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution due to the possible under-processing of the affected products discovered by the co-packer during its routine quality audit," Bumble Bee said in a statement about the recall. "Bumble Bee is working closely with the co-packer and the FDA to expedite the removal of products from commerce."

In the meantime, if you've bought any of the questionable cans, you're advised to throw them out. And if you're looking for a refund, hang on to the label or receipt and give Bumble Bee a buzz at (888) 820-1947.
